Although I - Nanda Laas - was well informed about what was understood by photography after my education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, (1977-1982), it never occured to me to dwell on this 'writing with light'.... until one day I came across the work of Edward Weston (1888-1945).

It was this photographer, as well as his colleagues representing the same school, who drew my attention to a world offering a different perspective, a sort of estrangement taking me to a 'different reality' to which I always had felt attracted to.

No wonder that from that moment on, I found a new possibility to develop myself further and in so doing to arrive at a greater expressiveness.

I hope a short explanation will suffice. Starting from known and familiar situations I search for ways to estrange them from the known reality, in a manner as subtle as possible and with a minimum of means.

In general, and in an intuitive way, I give these images free play, allowing them rather to become symbols and metaphors tickling the imagination. Wonderment plays the greater part in my work and I sincerely hope that visitors of my website will experience the same.
